About half a million people in the UK currently suffer with pernicious anaemia (PA), a condition where the body can't make enough healthy red blood cells because it doesn't have enough vitamin B12.
People who have PA fail to absorb enough vitamin B12 from food because they lack the intrinsic factor blocking antibody, a protein made in the stomach, which leads to vitamin B12 deficiency.
We produced this infographic to illustrate the impact of the condition in the UK. This follows a recent story on BJFM which revealed many PA sufferers are often denied access to vital vitamin injections.
