Scientists from the University of California have used advanced scanning techniques to find that male brains grow more quickly than those of female infants. The researchers also identified that areas involved in movement develop at the fastest pace with memory-associated aspects growing slowest, as the brain develops most rapidly overall just after birth. For centuries doctors have estimated brain growth using measuring tape to chart a baby’s head circumference over time but as head shapes vary, these tape measurements are not always accurate.
