MRI more effective at detecting prostate cancer than standard guided biopsies

Researchers found that the use of pre-biopsy MRI combined with targeted prostate biopsy was better than a biopsy alone in detecting prostate cancers that are likely to need treatment.

Using MRI scans to target biopsies is more effective than standard ultrasound guided biopsies when it comes to detecting prostate cancer which are likely to need treatment, scientists have said. The research, which combined results of seven studies covering 2,582 patients, was carried out by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) and Universities of Bristol, Ottawa, Exeter and Oxford has revealed, with the results published in JAMA Network Open. The researchers found that the use of pre-biopsy MRI combined with targeted prostate biopsy was better than a biopsy alone in detecting prostate cancers that are likely to need treatment,
