New course launched to develop skills in travel health

A new course has been developed on behalf of the British Global and Travel Health Association (BGTHA) to help those with an interest in learning more about travel health.

A new course has been developed on behalf of the British Global and Travel Health Association (BGTHA) to help those with an interest in learning more about travel health.

The course, designed as an entry-level introduction for those starting out, or those wishing to refresh their knowledge, is aimed at doctors, nurses and pharmacists and is particularly suitable for practice nurses, who nowadays perform the bulk of travel health advice in general practice.

The course may be especially useful for those who are unable for reasons of cost, access or any other factors, to access other available courses.

The course contains 10 “mini-courses” on the various aspects of travel health, each of which is split into a number of “lessons” on specific areas, interspersed with self-assessment questions with immediate feedback on the answers. The course can be taken in the student’s own time and at the student’s own pace, wherever a computer, laptop, tablet or smartphone is available. A certificate of completion can be provided when all sections of the course have been completed and the course has been recognised for CPD points by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow. It is currently being offered at a discounted initial course fee of £70 and BGTHA members are given a further discount.

Whilst there are other courses available, often at a more specialised level, this is a unique development in nurse education in travel health in that it offers comprehensive basic travel health education at an affordable cost. I would be very happy to write about this course for your journal, as it is likely to be of interest to many practice nurses and possibly some GPs. Please do not hesitate to contact me for further information.

The ABC of Travel Health has been developed by Dr Eric Walker and Dr Mike Townend, Hon Clinical Senior Lecturer, University of Glasgow Immediate Past Chairman, BGHTA, and features contributions from many other leading travel experts.
